For Immortalis, Wrath of the Lich King was a tumultuous expansion in terms of raiding. While we had a lot of success in Ulduar and Trial of the Crusader, the long year of Icecrown raiding was not quite as successful. We suffered upheavals in our roster, severe issues with server stability and internet connections on progression raid nights and general burnout and boredom for doing the same content for over a year.
I’m sure we all remember those nights we got to the Lich King, only to have people drop out at the last minute or have people D/C just as we pulled. I’m sure we all remember glumly standing there, 22 manning him, hoping people would return online. In the end, we made a decision to stop raiding until Cataclysm. We’d cleared everything in Icecrown Citadel 25 on normal mode except the Lich King. We had to suck it up and accept that we were never going to kill Arthas on 25 man, nor do any of the 25 man hard modes while it was all current content.
This stuck in our craw and we’ve always intended to go back and finish up our business with Icecrown. We got a retro-raid together one night and blasted our way through, finally killing the Lich King and unlocking the Hard Modes. Another night of clearing got us to Arthas Heroic and we decided that it was time to settle the score.
And boy, did we! I came up with a tactic and we spent an hour or so working on it and focusing on bringing him down. Not only did The Lich King go down but we also netted the realm first kill! Now, that’s payback!
Thanks to everyone who came along and contributed to the kill. It was a long time coming and here’s to many more!
